PAINTING WITHOUT FEAR
Palette knife workshop with Cyndra Bradford
“You can’t be timid with a palette knife,” “I am very
deliberate with the movement and the color choice. When
painting the cliffs, I choose colors other than the obvious
shades of brown to add depth and dimension because there
are certainly other colors in the cliffs. For instance, I see the
blue of the ocean reflected in the cliffs’ shadows, so I paint
those in with my palette knife.”
COLORFUL MUDS
Creating “color muds” is the first step of my painting one that allows
me to achieve a distinctive, unified color palette. “I’ve tried to simplify the color process with muds so that even if you’re a beginner
you can create a palette of workable colors and come away with a completed painting on your first day,” Establishing a set color
palette before painting is a novel concept to some artists who are used
to mixing as they go, but one that all students find useful. “I think
it’s very helpful to mix big piles of paint beforehand, It doesn’t hinder your process once the creativity starts flowing.”
